Tarik Daniel Skubal is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Detroit Tigers. He was selected by the Tigers in the ninth round of the 2018 MLB draft and made his MLB debut in 2020. He is a two-time American League (AL) Cy Young Award winner. In 2024, Skubal was named an All-Star and became the first American League pitcher since 2011 to capture both the pitching Triple Crown and the Cy Young Award in a full season. The Essential Commodities Reserves Act 1938 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was passed in anticipation of the Second World War and allowed the Board of Trade to build up stockpiles of commodities considered to be essential, specifically foodstuffs, animal feed, fertiliser and petroleum products as well as the raw resources needed to manufacture these products. They paid traders at least £13.5 million to stockpile materials in the following year and a half. The act was largely superseded by the Emergency Powers (Defence) Act 1939 and the establishment, in the same year, of the Ministry of Supply. The stockpiles and associated funding were wound up by 1947 and the act has not been made use of since. It was proposed for repeal by the Law Commission in 2015.

Read more →On 24 June 2026, two large strike-slip earthquakes affected northwestern and central Venezuela. The epicenters of both earthquakes were in the Veroes municipality in the state of Yaracuy. The first earthquake, which measured Mw 7.2, occurred at 18:04 VET; it was classified as a foreshock, and was followed 39 seconds later by a Mw 7.5 mainshock. Both earthquakes caused widespread damage across the country, particularly in La Guaira and Caracas, the capital. At least 235 people were killed, more than 4,300 were injured, and over 40,000 were reported missing. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) system predicted the death toll is likely to rise significantly, and could be as high as 100,000. The mainshock is the largest earthquake in Venezuela since the 1900 San Narciso earthquake.
